There are hundreds maybe thousands of search engines on the internet. The truth is 90 to 95% of internet users only use a handful of search engines.

Google, Yahoo, AOL, Live and ASK (formerly Ask Jeeves) are the most popular at the moment and they are all you really need to be concerned about.  Once you are listed with the main search engines, you will sooner or later show up on the less important engines.  A lot of the smaller search engines are just portals of the more popular search engines.

A lot of engines feed from the popular ones so there is no need to submit to these smaller engines since you are covered under the main ones.

WHERE TO SUBMIT

Once your website has at least 15 pages, you should submit your url to the big three.

     Google:    http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

     Yahoo:     https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit

     Live:         http://search.msn.co.in/docs/submit.aspx 

You will have to be patient.  It may take weeks or months for your website to appear.  This is really true with Google.  Live usually adds your site pretty quick.

DON’T KEEP SUBMITTING

Sometimes people become anxious while they are waiting for the search engines to add there website, and they keep submitting.  When you keep submitting you run the risk of getting your site banned.  It can be tempting to do this, but remain patient and rest assured that your site was received the first time.

THE ENGINES LOVE CONTENT

If you find out that your website has not been showing up in the major search engines.  You may want to look at your content.  Do you have more than 10 pages.  Google loves meaty websites.  You should have 15-20 pages.  The more content you have the better.

Just remember to be patient as I already mentioned, a lot of other search engines are just portals.  So once you show up in the big three, you’ll eventually begin receiving traffic from the other search engines.
